A map from the city of Round Rock shows the speed limits along University Boulevard. The top portion shows from Interstate 35 to Vizcaya Parkway, while the bottom portion shows the eastern end to Texas 130.

The Round Rock City Council on Thursday approved an ordinance establishing higher speed limits on portions of University Boulevard.

The speed limits were updated based on a speed study by HDR, an architecture, engineering, environmental and construction services company. The study helped to determine the speed at or below which 85% of drivers were going on the street. The study noted that on average, drivers were traveling at speeds higher than the current limits.

The speed limit on University Boulevard from Interstate 35 to Sunrise Road increased from 35 miles per hour to 40.

While a speed limit of 55 mph used to be in effect from A.W. Grimes Boulevard to Country Road 110, that speed is now enforced from A.W. Grimes Boulevard to Vizcaya Parkway. A 60 mph speed limit was extended further west, from Vizcaya to Texas 130 instead of from CR 110 to Texas 130.

The speed limit from Sunrise to A.W. Grimes remains at 45 mph.

After a years-long project completed last year, University Boulevard is a six-lane road from I-35 to Sunrise Road, a five-lane road from Sunrise to A.W. Grimes and has a continuous two-way, left-turn lane and two lanes in each direction from A.W. Grimes to Texas 130.

The study found that in 2023, approximately 28,000 vehicles traveled the road east of Sunrise Road and 18,000 vehicles west of Texas 130. The study also found that between 2020 and 2022, a total of 388 crashes happened in the corridor, before it was upgraded to six lanes.
